Don't Take Your Back Pain on Vacation!

By Sara Butler

With spring and summer right around the corner, you’re probably planning a vacation or two. Traveling is exciting and fun, but the back and neck pain that you might make worse with travel certainly isn’t. There are some easy things you can do to help relieve back and neck pain when you hit the road (or skies)! Use these tips to leave your back and neck pain at home while you're away.

In the Car

If your preferred mode of transport is a car, then you need to make sure you follow a few simple suggestions to keep back and neck pain away so you can enjoy your vacation! You should:

  • Get comfortable - Before you depart, make sure you set yourself up for the trip in comfort. Don’t sit on your wallet or anything else that will throw your body out of alignment. Make sure the things you need are within easy reach. Get the steering wheel, seat and mirrors set up right.
  • Take frequent breaks – You have to do more than just bathroom breaks. You need to get out at least once an hour to stretch and move around. It might slow down your progress, but it’ll be better for your body overall.
  • Bring ice – A cold pack may be needed for small aches and pains along the way, so pack one to help with inflammation that may make you uncomfortable.

On an Airplane

If you prefer to take planes, things can be a bit more complicated. You have less control over your environment in a plane, but that doesn’t mean you’re destined to exacerbate back or neck pain. You should:

  • Use a strategy – When you schedule your flight try to limit layovers or connections, but consider a flight that will have fewer people on it and therefore more room.
  • Support your back – You should get a small travel pillow for your back during the flight. Those airplane seats aren’t great for lumbar support, so use a pillow or a rolled up sweatshirt to help give you the support you need.
  • Move around – When possible, get up and walk a little. You may need to pretend to use the restroom quite a bit, but don’t be embarrassed about it – you’re doing it for your back!
