How to Define Strong and Be Strong

By Sandy Schroeder

Sometimes it's easy to be strong, but not all day, every day; those are the real heroes, who become a rock for the rest of us. They always listen, reach out to help, and show up when they are needed most.

Dr. Travis Bradberry, co-founder of TalentSmart, the agency that serves 75 percent of the Fortune 500 accounts, takes a look at the makeup of a strong person and tells us how it works.

Here are some of their characteristics.

They never feel sorry for themselves - Whenever things don't work out, they pause, and then take another tack.

They don't demand attention - They simply let their track record speak for itself and people come to them.

They know who they are - They are confident about what they do because they believe in their own abilities.

They never become petty - It may be tempting to be petty but it is a waste of time. Avoid the little wars and focus on the big projects that are worth your time.

They don't expect rewards - Each project is a new opportunity, but they never feel they are owed anything. They earn success because they worked for it.

They never let anyone kill their joy - Whenever negative people show up, they deal with them and move on, giving them as little space as possible.

They never hang on to grudges - Whatever happened in the past, stays there. They never waste time dwelling on negative results or people. They learn from the past and then let it go.

They put fear in its place - When things go wrong it can be tempting to slow down or hesitate before striking out again, but they never do. It's OK to be cautious, but it's not OK to let fear bring you down.

They stick with positive people - Negative people show up everywhere, but hanging out with them simply gives them more power. Look for the people who understand the value of a positive attitude. Watch what they do.

They move out of their comfort zones - Grooves are good, but there is a lot to be learned when you move out of your comfort zone. Step out of it whenever you can and learn something new every time.

They avoid living in the past - We all have great memories of past successes, but the future holds all of the new opportunities. Keep looking for what's happening now or about to happen.

Stay strong whenever you can and enjoy the natural boost it creates.
