How Wise People Hold On To Their Happiness

By Sandy Schroeder

Sometimes we get up feeling great, and then the day just goes sideways. At the end of the day we wonder what happened. In a fast-paced world, knowing how to hang on to peace of mind and happiness is crucial.

Here are a few things wise people do.

Know What Counts

Never let your happiness depend on things you can’t control. We can take responsibility for what we do, but we cannot control the actions of others. If we try to, we may spend a lot of time being frustrated. Instead, we need to focus on what we can control. Our work, actions and efforts are measureable, and more likely to help us move forward. Staying in touch with everyone around us is important, but continuing on with our work is essential.

Work on What’s Happening Right Now

It’s easy to spend time worrying about the future. But the work you are doing now will really count the most to help you achieve what you want. Many times the things people worry about never happen. Why invest time and energy in something that may change?

Learn How to Handle Negative Thoughts

Most of us have doubts that come up. When those doubts become inflated by fear, they can slow us down without providing healthy solutions. If we compare doubts with actual situations that have been successful, it’s easier to maintain perspective and move ahead.

Do the Homework to Stay Centered

All of us like to think we are making good decisions, and moving ahead. If we find ourselves questioning what we do, it’s a good idea to take a closer look. Get a range of opinions. Ask people that you work with, or long time friends to give their views. Do a breakout list that traces where you have been, and what you are doing. Now pull everything together to see what you think. You may decide you need some changes, or you are doing just fine.

Do Some Brainstorming for the Future

Wise people are always looking around and asking questions. I have a senior friend who is totally curious. He always asks more questions than anyone else in the room. Interestingly, he often has the best view and the most energy. To really be content with what we have, we must be aware of everything that is out there.

Life keeps changing, but happiness can prevail if we are willing to keep thinking and responding.
