Get Your Mental Health in Order Before the Fall

By Brandi Goodman

The fall season is just around the corner. For some, it's a time of autumn activities and fun. For others, seasonal affective disorder can start to set in. Fall is detrimental to some people's mental health as they start saying inside more and getting out less. The rain comes down. The weather gets colder. School starts back up. Much of the chaotic schedules people had were relaxed in the summer months. Do what you can to get your mental health in order before fall arrives.

Maintain an Exercise Routine

It's good to have an exercise routine going before the next season approaches. Sure, you may have to change it up a bit. The fall weather won't always allow you to get outdoors like you may have been doing for some time now. You can still find ways to exercise though that will have you boosting your mood as endorphins get released. Set a time and stick with it the best you can. In the morning before you get your day started is a good option.

Adjust Your Diet

The foods you eat can play a major role in how you feel. Eat processed food and junk and you're likely to experience bad moods, poor concentration, and even a lack of sleep. Eat nutritious foods and you can maintain your energy and keep your brain fueled. The fall is just the start of poor eating habits for many people. As the year progresses and the holiday season arrives, you're even more likely to overindulge in sweets and high-calorie meals. Adjust your diet now and be sure you're eating healthy so the extra you do consume later won't have such a big impact.

Buy Outdoor Gear

You don't have to avoid the outdoors once cold weather comes. Getting outside -- no matter the weather -- is actually good for your mental well-being. You just need to prepare by buying outdoor gear. Make sure you have hiking boots, rain boots, a good coat, a hat, gloves, and any other gear you'll need to enjoy the outside. Staying stuck inside and feeling blue doesn't have to be the case for you. With the right supplies, you can still go out and breathe in the fresh air.

Your mental health matters. Do everything you can to get it in check now so the fall weather has less of a chance to drag you down with it. Try to keep your spirits up and maintain your healthy habits from summer so you can stay well no matter what the next season brings.
