Back Pain: When You Need the Chiropractor
By Sara Butler
Back pain is common. So common that you have a higher chance of experiencing it at some point in your life than not experiencing it. A variety of things can cause back pain, from accidents to simply sleeping in a funny position. But how do you know when your back pain goes from bothersome to something that seriously needs to be evaluated by the chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic? Here are some signs that it's time to seek treatment.
You're Experiencing Chronic Pain
If you're experiencing pain for several weeks, then it's time to see the chiropractor. It's the instinct of many people to reach into their medicine cabinet when they feel a slight twinge but it's important to remember that pain isn't normal. Taking over-the-counter pain relievers only covers up the problem, it doesn't solve it. Have pain that won't go away evaluated by the chiropractor so they can determine what is actually causing it and help you to treat that.
Pain that Radiates
If you have pain in your neck or back that radiates to your arms or legs or you experience any type of weakness or numbness in your legs or feet, then you need to be evaluated by a chiropractor as soon as you can. This may be a sign that you have a herniated disc that is wreaking havoc on your spinal nerve somewhere along the line. That's a serious condition, so do not put off getting help.
Pain at Night
If you're experiencing back pain that gets worse at night or keeps you from getting sleep, that's not normal. It could indicate you have a serious issue going on with your back that needs to be addressed. Serious issues such as tumors, fractures, or disc degeneration could be to blame for this type of pain, so don't put off having it evaluated.
You've Had Recent Trauma
Any time you're involved in an accident, no matter how minor, you should be evaluated by the chiropractor. Whiplash injuries may not be the apparent right way but can cause long term problems. The sooner these can be identified and treated, the better it will go for you and the less pain you will be in.
You Walk Funny
If you're changing the way you walk to avoid pain in your back, then it's vital to get evaluated by the chiropractor. Difficulty walking or leaning to one side to try to alleviate pain will only lead to bigger problems down the road if not addressed.
