You May Want to Include Milk in Your Diet

By Tom Herrin

As we get older, many of us tend to think of milk as something that our children should have but we no longer need.  We all know how important it is in developing strong bodies.  It is obviously the major food source for young children and only becomes a little less so as they become older.  All of us had milk served with our meals in school lunch programs.  When I was young, we even had a milk break around the middle of the morning.  As we get older, too many of us tend to drink much less of it if we drink any of it at all.

Milk Can Be a Staple of Many Health Diets

When most of us hear milk mentioned, we think of milk that comes from cows.  It is known to be a major component in building strong bones because it contains more calcium than many other foods.  It is also high in protein.  This supplies what our bodies need in order to build or maintain muscle development.  Anyone who participates in any kind of heavy workout is encouraged to drink milk right afterwards in order to replace protein depleted through the exercise.  Many adults are in need of taking in more magnesium and potassium.  This can be found in milk as well.

Some of Us Have Sensitivity to Milk

There are individuals who have negative reactions to their consumption of milk.  Of course, we are referring to milk from cows.  Some of the causes of these reactions may be due to the natural sugars, the lactose, or some are believed to be due to one of the proteins.  Some milk producers are now able to offer milk that does not contain one of these proteins.  A great substitute here is almond milk.  It has a higher calcium content and may be used much the same as the other kinds of milk.

Other Nutrients

Many times, people are looking for something such as iron and mistakenly believe that milk is a good source.  Unless it has been added somehow, milk from cows does not contain iron.  It may be added to formula for babies, but it won't be in most of what you purchase at the market.  If you are in need of more iron, there are plenty of kinds of breakfast cereals that have high amounts of iron.  If you are needing this, read the labels before you purchase them.  You will be able to find what you need.
