Don't Be Napping When It Comes to Needing Sleep
By Tom Herrin
When I was young, it was preached to me over and over that I needed to go to bed early and get nine or ten hours of sleep. That was no exaggeration because everyone needs sleep, probably a lot more than they get. Kids and adults alike require sleep in order to function as they should. Too many people take shortcuts in order to do other things. While this may be admirable, it is not wise. Depriving people of sleep can threaten health as well as success in their daily activities.
Everyone Knows Children Must Have Sleep
Children should generally have nine or ten hours of sleep. Very young ones need more than that. When they have enough sleep, they will go to school feeling refreshed and having the energy to do what is required of them. Sleep is known to help with focusing attention. This alone is a major problem for many kids today. It can also improve their creativity and memory. They will be able to do a better job doing mental tasks such as math. If they participate in athletics, they will be able to have the opportunity to reach their full potential. No one has won any races or been a high scorer when they were tired from lack of sleep -- well, maybe not "no one," but it's rare.
Our Overall Health May Suffer From Lack Of Sleep
People who are sleep deprived are more likely to experience depression and greater stress. They may have a more difficult time managing their weight. Those who sleep less also tend to have a higher instance of accidents. Inflammation is believed to be less of a problem among those who have enough sleep. It is a critical part of health and needs to be given a rightful place as such.
Identify And Adjust To Get Better Sleep
There are some obvious things that interfere with sleep. Many people take in large amounts of caffeine, sometimes all day long. It is found in coffee and tea, but also in soft drinks, energy drinks, and even some foods. Naps during the day can ruin sleep. Irregular schedules are problems for some. Especially among people who work shifts, light can be trouble. Sound may be trouble for some while soothing and relaxing others, depending on how it is used. Don’t be too complacent about getting sleep. Make it a priority and improve your health.
