The Journey May Do the Most to Boost Health
By Tom Herrin
When people make the decision to get started on that long-awaited program of more exercise, many times they feel as if they need to jump in all the way. While this has merit for some, a slow, steady course is often better. The important thing is to get some kind of regular activity. It may be far more successful for those who want a solution that may have lasting effects. Some studies have indicated that the slower route is much more successful with much less physical stress on the body. Such a practice may also be much easier to maintain.
Older People May Take It Too Easy
It is often assumed that people should cease much of their activity once they reach a certain age. For years, that magic number seems to have been 65. There is really nothing special about that age, but society may have accidentally imposed the notion upon us. As a result, many take advantage of the pass to do very little. It has been recommended that those 65 or older get a minimum of 2 1/2 hours per week of moderate exercise. The estimate is that fewer than 20 percent of those do so.
Doing Something Is Always Best
Too many people seem to feel that they have to go all the way when beginning a new program. The real point is to do something. Alpa Patel, PhD., of the American Cancer Society, said basically that anytime people go from inactive to some kind of activity, they will have a significant decrease in their risk of early death from just about any cause. This is a good statement for the benefits of being active. Moving with some kind of regularity can make a world of difference. Establishing a mindset that involves this minimal activity level may protect health.
Make Your Own Program
It isn't all that difficult to find ways to be active. I try to take some extra steps walking places that I might otherwise drive to. I look for opportunities to take the stairs, walk the long way around, or make extra trips to do simple things. If nothing else, a couple of laps around the supermarket before beginning to shop may add some steps and minutes that can do more. If you have a dog you walk, increase your walking route and both of you will get more out of it.
