Is Cleaning House Causing Back Pain?

By Genevieve Cunningham

A clean house is a good feeling. Waking up to a clean kitchen or walking into a spotless bedroom after work helps the body and mind feel less stressed and more energized. But getting the job done is tough! Along with being short on time, many find that cleaning house hurts. If keeping up with household chores is making the body hurt, especially in the back or neck, take a look at what you can do to make the process easier.

How It Causes Pain

  • It’s All the Bending  - Leaning over the bathtub, scrubbing the floors and baseboards, and dusting those low areas all require you to stay in a bent or stooped position. This can be hard on the back, sometimes causing strain and injury to the area.

  • Those Muscles Get Tired - Let’s face it: Cleaning house is a lot of work! It’s possible that the soreness felt after cleaning actually comes from pulled or strained muscles that don’t get enough work except for in the case of cleaning.

  • It’s Hours of Poor Posture - Poor posture can really hurt the back, and cleaning generally requires some fairly poor posture on your part. This overstretching, stooping, leaning, and slouching can cause the vertebrae of the spine to become restricted, which then causes pain now as well as long after the cleaning is complete.

What You Can Do About It

  • Strengthen the Cleaning Muscles - The stronger the body, the more capable it is of completing important tasks. Even adding simple exercises to your routine, a quick 20-minute routine in the morning, can improve general muscle tone and make every active process in your life much more simple.

  • Take Frequent Breaks - Unless you’re on a strict deadline for getting the house spotless, take some breaks! Clean the bathroom, and then stop and rest before moving onto the kitchen. At the end of the day, as long as the house is clean, it doesn’t really matter how long it took to get the job done.

  • Get Chiropractic Care - Chiropractic care is an excellent way to keep the back in better condition in general. Chiropractors help to eliminate any joint restriction found in the spine, which can then eliminate pain and tension. They may also have some suggestions for how to perform everyday activities in a manner that protects the back and keeps you feeling your best day in and day out.
