Want to Succeed? Make Sure You Like What You Do
By Sandy Schroeder
Why is success effortless for some and such a struggle for others? Liking what you do may be one of the key differences. If you like what you are doing, success may be much easier to achieve.
If you love what you do, you will never work another day. Someone told me this a long time ago, and I have seen it played out in the careers of many successful people who loved what they were doing.
Psychology Today studied this idea, seeing what happens when people work on major goals like studying, eating healthy and exercising. The students were asked if they enjoyed their activities, and if they thought those activities were important.
The students said the long-term benefits were more important than the immediate pleasure. But research showed the more the students enjoyed an activity the longer they stayed with it.
How to Like What You Need to Do
The psychologists suggested we all look for things that we like in the activities that we know we need to do.
When you try to stay on a healthy diet, make it easier by going to a farmer’s market and choosing fruits and vegetables that you really like.
When you want to stick to an exercise routine, start with exercises that are fun for you. Biking, jump rope, tennis, jogging or walking can all work for you, but which one really appeals to you?
Studying to pursue the career you want works best when you have chosen a career that you really like and you have found ways to keep the choice interesting. Pulling out individual research that fascinates you can be the difference in writing a superior paper or an average one.
How to Avoid Uphill Battles
As the researchers looked at the student’s behaviors, research concluded it is hard to keep going when you don’t enjoy the work.
Sometimes the motivation of the rewards can get you through parts of a program that you do not enjoy. But if you simply do not enjoy the whole program, you might be wiser to pick another.
I am a word person. If someone put me in a spot where I had to deal with numbers all day, every day, they might come back to find me missing. I can do numbers, and I do them when they are necessary, but I know it would be a mistake to pick a job that was all about numbers. Other people feel that way about words.
Whatever feels comfortable will contribute a lot to your success.
