Are You Drinking Enough Water?


With summer upon us, the temperatures, the temperatures rising, and the humidity sucking the water out of us all, the need to drink water is as high as it ever has been. However, it is not just the summer does not necessitate drinking water, but the massive health benefits that we can see if we make sure we are drinking the adequate amount of water regularly.

We have always heard that we should be drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, but so many of us fall short of this goal and only manage to get in about two or three glasses. But why do we need to drink so much water? After all it is so boring and it has no flavor! But the health benefits of drinking water are incomparable to any other behavior that we can use to improve our health status.

For starters, our body is between 60% and 65% made up of water. Water molecules create the cells, the organelles within the cells, and so many other necessary components of our body. Our tissues, our nerves, our muscles, our skin; everything is rooted in water. Thus, if we are getting enough water into our body then we are supplying our body with the fuel it needs to create new structures. It also helps us regulate our body temperature, encourage transport of nutrients around the body, and maintain adequate fluid balance.

Another aspect of proper water intake is the improvement of functioning in the kidneys. Roughly 200 quarts of blood per day are passed through the kidneys and these organs work hard to remove waste and unnecessary materials from our bodies. But without the right amount of water intake, the kidneys do not have enough fluid to enact this process.

Water is also good for our mental health. Proper hydration enforces focus and concentration through optimal brain functioning and nutrient transport.

If you want an increase quality of life and a substantial increase in you overall health status, make an effort to get in that 8 glasses of water per day. But do not feel like you have to over do it - it is possible to become ill from drinking too much. And if regular water is boring to you, add a sprig of mint or wedge of lemon to make it a little more interesting!
