5 Tips for Pregnancy Back Pain
By Debra Rodzinak
It is common knowledge that many pregnant women suffer back pain during the later months of pregnancy. With the extra weight pulling the lower back forward and hormones relaxing the ligaments of the joints in the pelvis, many women find that they are quite miserable during the last three months of pregnancy. However, there are some ways to alleviate back pain.
Many people who suffer with lower back pain find that chiropractic treatments help to relieve back pain. A qualified chiropractor is skilled in applying gentle pressure to a pregnant woman’s back to help with pain and stiffness of the spine and joints in the back that are stretched during pregnancy.
With a growing baby, the center of gravity of a pregnant woman shifts. Many women lean back, which can put strain on the lower back muscles. Remember these tips for good posture:
- Stand up tall and straight
- Keep the chest high
- Shoulder should be relaxed and back
- Keep the knees slightly bent
- Stand with a wider stance for stability
- Place a small pillow on the lumbar while sitting
Do not sleep on the back. Instead, lay on the side with one or both knees bent. Invest in a support pillow or pregnancy pillow placed between the knees, under the belly, and behind the back for support while sleeping.
Heat, Cold, and Massage
Massage of the lower back can help ease tense muscles. Just find a licensed masseuse who is familiar with a pregnancy massage and has a table that will allow for a pregnant woman to lay on her stomach without discomfort. Heat and cold can also be used for sore muscles.
Only with the OK from a health provider, gentle activities such as walking, water aerobics, or stretching can help with back pain and increase strength in the back muscles. Just make sure that the exercises performed do not cause too much jarring. If a woman has not been exercising prior to getting pregnant, a vigorous exercise routine should be avoided.
