Keep Your Muscles Strong for Better Overall Health

By Stephen R. Farris

No matter what age you are, it's important to keep up your strength. What I mean by this is keeping your muscle strength up.

Not only will your overall health improve, but you'll ensure that the muscles around your joints continue to maintain their health in order to prevent injury, or worse, broken bones.

One of the best ways to keep your strength up is by training with weights. If you don't have access to weights, use your body instead, as long as you're forcing your muscles to do the work by providing resistance.

There are five common methods of strength training that are beneficial to building muscle, strengthening muscles, and keeping them toned. They include:

  • Muscular hypertrophy

  • Muscular endurance

  • Circuit training

  • Maximum muscle strength

  • Explosive power

Many of these techniques help strengthen muscles, increase endurance, and condition muscles, as well as provide power and explosiveness, especially if you're involved in sports.

Don't forget about keeping your core strong as well. After all, your core is the center of your well-being.

Besides maintaining overall muscle strength and becoming stronger, there are a few additional health benefits associated with strength training, such as:

  • Burning calories in a more efficient manner

  • You'll begin to see a decrease in belly fat

  • Makes you look leaner

  • Helps reduce your risk of falls

  • Lowers your risk of injury

  • It's good for your heart

  • Helps to manage blood sugar levels

  • Promotes greater flexibility and mobility

  • Makes your bones stronger

  • Esteem booster

  • Improves brain health

  • Helps put you in a better mood

  • Helps promote a better quality of life

If you're a beginner at strength training, start out with the basic movements and routines. Make sure you don't overload yourself, and try not to overdo it. As mentioned earlier, you don't always have to go to the gym for strength training. You can use your body weight, or invest in resistance bands, or use whatever items you have around the house.
