Are You Getting Enough Magnesium?

Magnesium is pretty darn important to your overall health and wellness. It’s been found to help reduce headaches, curb cravings for sugar, and even help to ease anxiety. Yet according to the Department of Health and Human Services, 68 percent of Americans don’t get enough magnesium. Few people realize just how important magnesium is to their bodies or that stress can deplete magnesium levels to the point in which it can impact your blood pressure or even how well you sleep at night. It’s pretty safe to say that you’re probably not getting enough magnesium every day, but here are a few ways you can fix that!

Snack Smart

Men need 400 to 420 milligrams of magnesium per day while women need 310 to 320 milligrams per day. One way to make sure you’re getting the right amount is by changing up your snacking habits. Adding dark, leafy greens to your day can help you to up your magnesium intake. Swiss chard, kale, and spinach are great go-to foods but you can also get magnesium by including squash, broccoli, almonds, and beans into your day.

Mineral Water Miracle

Sparkling water has become quite popular and now it can be a conduit for getting enough magnesium! Many sparkling mineral waters are great sources for magnesium with one liter providing about one-third of women’s daily magnesium requirement and one-quarter of a man’s. So, look at the nutrition label on your favorite sparkling beverage to see how much magnesium it can add to your day!

Take a Hot Bath

You can absorb magnesium through your skin, though it’s not the best way to go about getting it. There are many beauty products on the market that have started to include magnesium but one of the best ways to try to absorb it is a hot bath with added Epsom salts. This also has the great side effect of helping to reduce any inflammation, swelling, or aches and pains you’re experiencing. Plus, it’s a great way to relax before bed to ensure a good night’s rest – which is equally important to your overall health and wellness.

Getting enough of the vitamins and minerals you need each day is important. So, make sure you’re eating a balanced diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
