Where Do You Stand on Likeability?

Kids, small dogs and seniors all recognize likeability instantly. They know likeability when they see it and they head right for it. There’s a warmth there that’s hard to beat.

Most of us understand likeability too, but we are not sure how to keep it working in the midst of everything else. Sometimes as deadlines loom, likeability can take a backseat if we are not careful.

Ways to Practice Likeability

Lifehack gives us a few quick cues, reminding us to be good listeners, to stay humble, avoid being judgmental, and to help others whenever we can. They also say we should stay positive, show up on time and follow through.

But the key attribute is being genuine.

If you think about it, the people you like and trust are genuine. You can count on them to say what they mean and to be honest in what they do. These are the people we call when we have a problem, or turn to when we need advice. We do not have to wonder if they are telling us the truth, or guess what they will do next. Genuine people never leave others floundering or guessing. They become treasured members of our inner circle that we respect and help whenever we can.

I have had close friends, bosses, family members and relatives who could give lessons in being genuine. The close friends always listen and help even when their own problems are stacking up. They always return calls and often reach out to check on me. The genuine bosses never play games. They just help get the job done and teach as much as they can. Bosses like that generate respect and often are rewarded with loyal employees. The close family members are never too tired or unavailable. We are family and that is that. Sometimes that means we really have to stretch, losing sleep and pushing through the tough times. But of course we are going to do it.

The genuine relatives are the same way. Whatever it takes when problems arise they will show up and hang in there. I have an uncle who has weathered many health problems, but he never stops smiling and he is always the first to show up when a problem has to be solved. I can just feel myself relaxing when I sit down to talk to him.

Overall, likeability is invaluable in making our days go better, and being genuine is one of the best paths to achieve it.
