Wise Ways to Treat Your Spine Better
By Sandy Schroeder
Most of us have good intentions as we navigate our daily schedules. We understand what exercise, healthy diet, and lowered stress levels can do. But then a new project comes up, family issues develop, or some other challenge emerges.
Usually we just keep going. But new spine or other joint pain can change the whole picture. Back pain or other joint issues can slow life way down. Protecting your spine could be one of the best health decisions you could make.
Here are some key ways to keep you spine healthy from the American Chiropractic Association.
Keep your weight in check - Eat healthier and stay hydrated. Substitute nuts, fruits and vegetables for chips or cookies.
Stay active – Do whatever it takes to log in 30 minutes per day of walking, biking or swimming, with your doctor’s approval. Add outdoor time whenever you can.
Stretch first – Before you start gardening or working out, do a few stretches. When you finish, do a few more. If you are seated all day, break up the time with stretches.
Choose the right shoes – Reserve high heels for special occasions that do not involve much walking. Wear lower heels, and get athletic shoes with good support, for jogging, running or walking.
Choose the right mattress – Choose a mattress of medium firmness. Pick pillows with down or other filling that allows the head to sink into the pillow to avoid creating awkward angles for the neck.
Lift carefully and keep totes light – Keep children and objects close to the body when you lift. Never twist as you lift. Never bend from the waist. Power lifts with the legs.
Avoid smoking or secondhand smoke – Smoke inhibits blood flow, depriving the spine of nutrients and oxygen.
Make Your Workplace Fit You
If you sit most of the day at work, take frequent breaks to protect your spine.
- Keep feet flat on the floor
- Keep knees at the same level or below hips
- Make sure your chair supports your back
- Keep your monitor at eye level
- Allow about three finger of space between the chair and the back of your leg
Whatever you do to improve your spinal health, the results will be well worth the effort if you can avoid joint pain issues.
