Free Your Breath from Asthma With Chiropractic
By Chris Brown
As a periodic asthma sufferer, I understand the desperation and fear that comes with not being able to breathe fully. Even in non-emergency asthmatic times, our breath influences much about our lives from our immune system strength to our metabolism and stress levels. The inability to take a full, deep breath may be influencing much about your life that you view as static. Luckily, chiropractic may be able to relieve breathing issues permanently and manifest the life-benefits of free breath.
The Argument for Chiropractic Treatment of Asthma
It may seem strange to consider chiropractic (a medical field focusing on the physical manipulation of joint dysfunctions) as a potential treatment for a lung and airway disease. However, research has displayed evidence supporting the use of chiropractic for asthma. The theory is that subluxations in the joints or spine disrupt the nervous system and can cause dysfunctional immune responses that generate inflammation around the bronchial tubes.
In a review of eight studies on the subject, chiropractic care showed subjectively significant improvements in asthma symptoms. The study did note that objective quantitative data, was insufficient to conclude any impact from chiropractic. That said, with many patients, their subjective asthma symptom relief, and their ability to stop medication use, was significant enough to support chiropractic treatment. Specific case studies have found real, though subjective, results from chiropractic care.
Case Study: 5-Year-Old Patient With Asthma
Chiropractic manipulation proved beneficial for a 5-year-old with chronic asthmatic symptoms of chest tightness, shortness of breath, nasal congestion, and cough. The child had been unresponsive to mainstream asthma treatments. Over the course of three days, the patient underwent five spinal manipulations to correct subluxations. The study found a "drastic" reduction in the patient's symptoms and he was able to reduce all asthma medication (with the exception of infrequent albuterol use). This study shows that even a child with relatively new subluxation-caused asthma can be relieved by chiropractic methods.
Case Study: 36 Patient Study
Thirty-six asthma sufferers, aged 6-17, rated their quality of life significantly higher and asthma severity lower after three months of combined chiropractic and medical management. While the study notes that objective lung tests found little to no change, the patients maintained their subjective improvements even a year following treatment. This speaks to the longevity of chiropractic treatment on asthma.
