Chiropractor Saves Match for Taekwondo Athlete
By Chris Brown
Chiropractic typically requires consistency, and sometimes needs multiple corrections, to see massive results. Just as one session at the gym doesn't make you instantly strong, chiropractic's effectiveness builds upon each visit. However, there are situations where a single session of spinal manipulation can result in extreme and immediate benefits.
Such was the case with a national level taekwondo competitor who suffered a locking of her cervical spine mid-match. Chiropractic was able to swing into immediate action to fix her injury, which allowed her to return to the mat to finish the fight.
Taekwondo Athlete Suffers Locked Cervical Spine
In a national taekwondo competition, a female athlete suffered a locked neck following a sudden, non-traumatic head movement. Also called cervical facet strains, a locked neck occurs when the cervical spine in the neck painfully locks at the facet joint. It can be caused by poor neck support while sleeping, but it is typically the result of a strong whiplash of the neck that injures the facet joint. This causes swelling at the site and limited mobility. In the case of the taekwondo athlete, the whiplash-like injury occurred during a non-contact moment of play, so the chiropractor was able to immediately see the injury occur in the moment. In any other instance, the athlete would have had to forfeit the remainder of the match due to the condition. However, lucky for her, a chiropractor stepped from the shadows to perform a spinal manipulation that immediately corrected the injury and allowed her to return to the match renewed.
Chiropractic Saves the Match for Injured Athlete
The chiropractor corrected the cervical facet strain by locating the causal subluxations (via touch) and removing them from her neck's cervical spine with directed adjustments. Following the spinal manipulations, the athlete's range of motion immediately returned to pre-injury levels. The most incredible part of this story is that this all occurred within the one-minute allowed for medical assessment. This means that the chiropractor was able to efficiently evaluate the patient, perform the correction, and clear the athlete for action within a high-pressured but short time period.
