Bad Habits that Hurt Your Back (And How to Stop)

By Genevieve Cunningham

Bad habits are a part of life. Whether it’s biting your fingernails, drinking too much caffeine, sleeping past the alarm, or grinding your teeth, we all have those pesky little habits that we wish we could stop. For the most part, these habits don’t cause significant damage. But what happens when they do cause harm? Some of the habits that we keep on a regular basis are bad for our health, more specifically for the back. Take a look at these common habits that lead to back pain, followed by what you can do to stop.

You’re a Mattress Hoarder

OK, so you probably don’t have 10 or 20 mattresses laying around your house, but you do have a 13-year-old mattress that you’ve been sleeping on for as long as you can remember. This refusal to buy a new mattress is incredibly bad for your back. The mattress sags and has lumps in all the wrong places. It offers little support for your back, and even though you think it’s “just broken in,” it’s actually contributing to back pain and neck stiffness. The solution: Suck it up and buy a new mattress already.

You’re a Sugar Fiend

A little bit of sugar likely won’t hurt you all that much. But, if your afternoon snack (or breakfast or whatever) is a Twinkie, a Ding Dong, or a Honey Bun, then you’re not doing yourself any favors. Excess sugar not only causes you to gain excessive weight, but it can rob your body of getting the healthier nutrients that you need to function. The solution: Take the time to plan a healthy snack instead of a quick, sweet treat. If you’re hankering for something sweet, opt for fruit and enjoy.

You Binge NetFlix

I love a good NetFlix binge as much as the next person, but there’s no denying that this prolonged sitting isn’t doing your back or body any favors. If you binge something every once in awhile, you’re probably OK. But, if you spend your entire weekends watching 13 episodes of Orange is the New Black and the next weekend watching 12 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, there’s a really big chance that your health is suffering as a result. The solution: Space your episodes over a period of a few days. If you really can’t wait, then get up and get moving while your favorite episodes are playing.

Another Great Solution: Chiropractic Care

Another way to protect your back whether you have bad habits or not is to get chiropractic care. Chiropractors help to keep your spine properly aligned, which then promotes a healthier spine and body long-term. They may also help you pick up healthier lifestyle habits with advice centered around your particular body, spine, and daily habits. For a healthy spine, it’s good to skip the bad habits, but it’s even better to add chiropractic care for a finishing touch.
