Easy Ways To Fight Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is an ongoing battle amongst our youth. What seems to be the culprit in overweight youth?  From a lack of activity to a high calorie diet, there are quite a few factors contributing to childhood obesity.  It is often times up to a parent to set an example, and provide healthy options to build the foundation for a nutritious diet for years to come.

Below are a few ways that you can keep your child healthy and prevent obesity:

Extracurricular Activities

A great way to get a child to be more social, and to find out what sports they may excel in is to get them involved in an extracurricular activity.  Soccer, swimming and karate are just a few options that your kid can choose from to participate in. Involving a young child will help discipline them in eating healthy and the importance of staying active.

The Importance of Breakfast

Both kids and adults should know the importance of eating breakfast in the morning. Whether it's oatmeal or a bowl of cereal, having your kid eat something in the morning will boost their metabolism and get them started for the day.

Eliminate Unhealthy Snacks

Both at school and at a home, a child can be active and work up an appetite.  For snacks in between meals, it’s important to eliminate unhealthy snacks such as candy and soda from a child's options. Introduce them to fruits, veggies, nuts, and healthy beverages such as water or milk.

Cut Back on TV and Video Games

The one thing that can limit your child's ability to be both social and active is to allow them to play an endless amount of video games and TV.  Allow a certain amount of time that your kid can watch TV and play video games. You can limit it to certain days or a certain time per day.

Sleep

It's important that your child is getting an adequate amount of sleep.  Organizing time for activities, homework, and family time is a good way to make sure that everything is done in time for them to get enough rest for the upcoming day.
