Cool Off This Summer With the Texas State Fruit

By Kate Gardner

Did you know Texas has a state fruit? It does! State Symbols USA tells us that in 1993 the Texas red grapefruit was granted the honor of being the state fruit. Texans have been growing grapefruit for over a century, developing the signature red variety in 1929. What makes this citrus fruit so amazing?

Health Benefits

Grapefruit, the youngest fruit in the citrus family, has a variety of health benefits. Health.com declares it "one of the 20 best foods to eat for breakfast." Red and pink grapefruits tend to offer more health benefits than white grapefruit (and they're sweeter).

  • Low-calorie - Grapefruit is a great low-calorie snack. An entire fruit only has about 80 calories!

  • Hydration - Grapefruit has more water than any other fruit, helping to keep you hydrated.

  • Cholesterol - Research shows that eating grapefruit can lower your levels of LDL -- the bad cholesterol. The study in question found that eating red grapefruit was especially helpful. Adding a grapefruit a day to your diet can also lower your triglyceride levels by up to 27 percent.

  • Blood pressure - You shouldn't eat grapefruit if you are already taking a blood pressure medication, but if you're not, doing so can lower your systolic blood pressure (that's the upper number) by as much as five points. That may not be a huge amount, but five points could help you avoid medication.

  • Vitamin-packed - Grapefruit contains large amounts of Vitamins A and C, two vitamins that are important for a healthy immune system.

Unfortunately, grapefruit doesn't mix well with many medications, including blood pressure and some allergy medications. Before you add grapefruit to your daily menu, take a look at what medications you take to see if it's safe.

Ways to Enjoy

When it comes to eating grapefruit, most of us probably think about eating it plain for breakfast, which isn't too exciting. But there are so many ways to enjoy grapefruit!

  • Salads - Grapefruit can give your salad a citrusy zing! Combine it with your other favorite fruits for a delicious fruit salad or dice it up to add to a side salad.

  • Desserts - We regularly use lemon and orange in desserts, so why not grapefruit, too? Grapefruit popsicles are the perfect summer snack on a hot a day.

  • Glazes and grill - The sweet tang of grapefruit goes well with chicken and makes a tasty addition to your glaze for grilling. You can also grill grapefruit with a mixture of sugar and spices for an amazing treat.

  • Drinks - Eating grapefruit provides the most health benefits, but drinking the juice is good for you, too!

There's a lot to celebrate when it comes to the Texas state fruit!
