Have a Heart Healthy Valentine's Day Every Day

By Sara Butler

February is a month of love. After all, it includes Valentine’s Day, which fills a lot of people with happiness. But if you’re trying to be more conscious of your health, the special days between you and your loved one can be a day with a lot of pitfalls. Here are a few ways you can really celebrate your heart by protecting it and promoting heart health.

The Traditional Dinner

Eating out to celebrate with your special someone is a classic tradition. It can be romantic and candlelit – but also make it heart healthy. When looking at the menu, consider a dish of baked or broiled fish or some other lean meat. Pair it with roasted or grilled vegetables without butter. You can give in and have a decadent dessert – just share it instead of having a whole one to yourself.

Sweets for Sweetie

Creamy and rich chocolates in a heart-shaped box are a classic Valentine’s Day tradition, but they may not be the best choice for your heart health. The good news is that dark chocolate is actually really good for your heart, just as long as it’s also low in sugar. Pair dark chocolate with some berries and you’ve got a heart healthy couple.

Give the Gift of Health

Diamonds are great, sure, but you know what’s even better? Good health. Instead of a gift like jewelry, try a cooking class or a dance class. These are gifts that last a lifetime, and learning new and healthy habits together will give you more Valentine’s days to celebrate.

Go Outside

If the weather permits, get outside and get moving together. Pack a backpack full of some romantic goodies and take a hike out into the woods for a picnic. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, then you can try indoor rock climbing, swimming, or a museum tour. Whatever you decide to do, being active together is something that should continue beyond one special day of the year.

Your loved one’s heart is something special, and what better day to celebrate the heart and its continued health than taking car of it. Whatever you decide to do while celebrating romantic nights, remember that love comes in many forms, and being concerned about the health and longevity of those you love is a great way to show you care.
