The Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil
By Sara Butler
Essential oils are quite popular. Some of them have been shown to have positive effects on comfort and relief from stress. Lavender essential oil has been found to have many positive side effects in addition to smelling really nice. Here are some of the ways you can use lavender essential oil to your health benefit.
Lavender essential oil can help calm you and bring sleep on easier. It’s a common alternative treatment for people who have problems sleeping at night. It helps to relax and calm you as you lay down and try to find sleep for the night. Try putting a few drops on your pillowcase or use an essential oil diffuser to help disperse it throughout your room.
Care for Your Hair
This essential oil has been found to be helpful in the treatment of hair loss, especially for people who suffer from the autoimmune disease called alopecia, a condition that causes the body to reject hair follicles, leading to hair loss. A study out of Scotland found that 40 percent of alopecia sufferers experienced increased hair growth after rubbing lavender oil onto their scalp regularly.
Minor Burn Treatment
Sometimes you touch something hot and before you know it, you’ve got an angry red burn. Lavender oil has shown some benefits for use on minor burns as it soothes the skin and encourages healing. This oil also has anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce swelling and prevent scarring. Just remember, if your burn is serious (broken skin, blisters, etc), you should seek medical help. But maybe sniff a little oil to calm yourself first!
Increased Respiratory Health
Speaking of sniffing, this essential oil has been found to have a great therapeutic effect for people suffering from the flu, throat infections, colds, and sinus congestion. People with bronchitis, asthma, and other respiratory problems also found it helpful. Just remember, this isn’t a treatment for these issues, merely something that will help soothe you a bit as you recover.
Great Skin Care Treatment
If you have acne, you may want to consider using some lavender essential oil. It can help to reduce scarring and can also be used topically for dermatitis and eczema. If you have one, talk to your dermatologist about it.
Many people love to use a natural substance to repel bugs, and lavender oil is a great one! If you apply some oil to your skin before you go outside, it may help to prevent bites. And if you do get bitten or stung, you can use it to help reduce pain and irritation of the bite.
