Stressed Out? Take the Next Exit to Change Directions

By Sandy Schroeder

Some things really are easier than they look. If you are living with stress day in and day out, you may feel trapped. Everywhere you look, you see negatives. But there are better answers.

Psychologists remind us happiness is just as accessible as stress. They say stress and happiness are both contagious. By simply shifting gears, you can choose to tap some lighter moments, as you exercise, laugh, hug a child, or help a senior.

Instead of letting stress impact your health and weaken your immune system, enjoy the boost of positive emotions that decrease pain and reduce anxiety. You just have to make the choice to change directions.

Here are some ways to flip the switch.

Get outside and get moving – I can feel the difference the minute I move outside. My mood lightens as the sun and the breeze ease my thoughts. Use morning, lunch and afternoon breaks to step outside for a few minutes. Stretch, walk or meditate.

Round up old friends to reminisce – Reach out to reconnect with old friends. Have coffee or lunch and catch up.

Create a special supper – Make it a taco or pizza night, and enjoy a relaxing evening with family and friends.

Go biking with your family – After work, or on the weekends, take an hour or two to get out of the house and bike through the park.

Plan a surprise for someone – Pick a special friend or member of the family. Surprise them with a special birthday party. You will make their day and lighten yours.

Go for a run with your dog – When everything needs readjusting, you can count on your dog to be delighted to see you, and ready for a run.

Start walking every morning – Starting your day with exercise could put your schedule into a fresh perspective. New ideas may pop up when you are walking. My friends say walking helps them sort everything out.

Pick a new sport – If you have always wanted to play golf, this may be the time for lessons. Do the homework and give it a try.

Volunteer – Check your community hospital or library to lend a hand. Take your kids along and discover how much fun it can be to help others.

Once you have found some good ways to dump stress, keep them on hand.  Remember to use them when you need them. Life is too short to waste on stress.
