4 Reasons At-Home Workouts are Awesome
By Kate Gardner
This is what it's like when I try to go to the gym. I spend a month figuring out when I can fit it in. On the day of the workout, I get ready, then spend an extra 20 minutes looking for my headphones. I drive to the gym, start to exercise, then realize I'm running late and need to be home in 20 minutes. I rush home, having completed only half the workout I wanted. It's a lot of trouble for a 20-minute run on a treadmill and it's the reason I choose to work out at home instead.
Benefits
I'm not the only one who prefers to work out at home. HomeGymFiend.com, a site dedicated to working out at home, lists many of the benefits.
Save time - If you go to the gym, you have to get ready, find your headphones, drive there, exercise, and drive back. That can add a lot of extra time to your fitness routine. If you work out at home, you put on your workout clothes -- or not (it's your house, wear what you want) -- and exercise.
Convenience - Since working out at home can take so much less time, it's more convenient to fit it into your day. For me, working out at home makes it possible to get the recommended 150 minutes of weekly activity.
Cost - Working out at home can be as cheap as you want it to be. Bodyweight exercises and exercise DVDs from your local library can keep your workout costs to practically nothing. Depending on your fitness goals and level, you may need to invest in some equipment to work out at home, but by skipping the monthly gym fees, you're likely to save money in the long run. You can cut costs by shopping sales and looking for second-hand equipment. I hit the jackpot when I picked up a treadmill from a friend who was moving.
Freedom - At home, you have the freedom to work out however you want without that pesky fear of being judged. This means I can enjoy dance workouts even though I know full well I look crazy while I'm doing them.
Sure, if I wanted to get to the gym, I could make it work. But now that I've tasted the sweet freedom of working out at home, I wouldn't have it any other way.
