Sherman College of Chiropractic's Newest Graduating Class

Education is a core value in the medical discipline of chiropractic care. While the education pathway may not be the same as the traditional pathway for other doctors, chiropractors are tasked with meeting rigorous educational requirements before they have the ability to practice. The difference is that chiropractic students learn about biology, spinal conditions and treatments for the whole body.

Normally, chiropractors begin their educational pathway with a four year undergraduate degree in a scientific discipline with pre-medical requirements, just like any other prospective doctor pursuing medical school. However the main difference lies in the advanced education. Other types of doctors will then move on to medical school, while chiropractors move from undergraduate education to chiropractic college. This type of higher education allows chiropractors to fully grasp what it takes to be a chiropractor, gain an all-encompassing understanding of the discipline itself, and what they can expect when the enter the field.

This past June at the Sherman College of Chiropractic, 18 students received their Doctor of Chiropractic degrees, allowing them to fully pursue chiropractic care as their profession. The Sherman College of Chiropractic in South Carolina is one of the oldest institutions of its kind and matriculating from this institution gives these students quite the distinction. The graduating students will certainly have a bright path ahead of them.

Before acceptance to Sherman College of Chiropractic’s program, prospective students are tasked with completing 90 hours of scientific college-level coursework. When they are accepted into the program, the will be expected to complete 4,800 coursework hours over the course of three to four years. This education is a combination of testing, reading, practicals, and hands-on field work to simulate what their careers as chiropractors will hold. The students are held to rigorous standards in order to ensure they are fully prepared to treat all people.

18 students may seem like a small class, but this is a common size for graduate classes of chiropractic colleges. There is a glaring need for more physicians nationwide, and doctors of chiropractic are no exception. Institutions like Sherman College of Chiropractic, Palmer College of Chiropractic, and numerous other higher education institutions that focus on chiropractic care will continue to attract new students over time. Hopefully we will see more attention paid to spreading awareness of chiropractic care and how this educational pathway can change the lives on millions.
