Why Houseplants Are Good for Your Health
By Amy Silva
When we consider the ways we can improve our health we typically think of diet and exercise first. Many of us don't think of houseplants in regard to health, but they are beneficial to have around the house or even in the office. They serve an aesthetic purpose and help to bring the outdoors in. We can buy pots to match our decor, and buy plants in different colors, sizes and shapes. The best part about having indoor plants is the happy feeling we get from being around them. What makes us feel good around greenery and what other benefits do they have on our health?
Benefits of Having Houseplants
Different houseplants will have different effects on health, but studies show some can reduce dust, and dust can be irritating to those with allergies. One study shows carbon dioxide can be lowered and can make people feel a room's air is fresher just by plants being in a room. Plants may also help filter air impurities that can cause headaches or irritate eyes or airways. Studies show having plants at work may help workers feel more productive and help them concentrate, as well as give creativity a boost.
Taking care of plants boasts other benefits such as reducing stress, and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Gardening outdoors is said to help lower the risk of dementia, and it may provide similar benefits when caring for indoor plants. Touching the dirt, feeling the leaves and watering plants can provide a sense of calm and offer improved health.
