Save Time, Walk Up Hills for Your Health

By Tom Herrin

A lot of people feel as if they really need to exercise but really don’t have the time to do so effectively.  While most know of a workout that seems ideal for them, it may often seem as if they are just a little short on having enough time to do it.  As a result, they may put it off with the thought that if they can’t do it right, they don’t want to do it at all. This may work for some things, but when it comes to protecting health, it is not necessarily the case.  One good way to get in a workout while using as little time as possible is to walk up hills. It is amazingly productive.

It Can Work the Heart

Most people have a few specific goals for a workout.  One of them is usually to work and protect the heart. Walking up hills can provide the kind of work for the heart that allows it to work hard in a relatively short period of time.  Recommendations for the heart are usually along the lines of 30 minutes per day of work. Walking up hills can increase the intensity of the workout, thus doing more for the heart. When it is able to move blood in a workout such as this, it can become more efficient.

It Can Protect Bone Mass

A large number of people are concerned about bone mass -- and for good reason.  It may lead to a lot of other problems. Women seem to be especially vulnerable.  Doing some kind of weight-bearing exercise can help to strengthen bones. Walking up hills can meet this need as there is ample opportunity for people to bear weight as they ascend the hills.  Since those who walk up hills usually must also walk down, they can find some places where they can carve out a route that covers the same area several times. They still get the same amount of benefit.

It Can Help Burn Difficult Body Fat

Walking up and down hills can be enough of a varied activity that it causes the body to work at different levels.  Anytime we can have several changes in the pace and intensity of our exercises as we do so, we may be able to burn those fats that are hard to work.  The fats in and around our organs can be a serious problem. Walking hills may help to resolve some of this issue. To save some time and create a change of pace for yourself, go find some hills and walk them.  They are all around in parks and parking lots.
