How Chiropractic Helped Me Manage My Scoliosis

In eighth grade I found out I had scoliosis. I remember the moment like it was yesterday. The examiner made all of us line up in the girl’s locker room and bend over, one by one, as she walked around and examined our spines. Every girl before me was dismissed as having a perfectly straight spine, and then she got to me. I realized she was spending extra time scrutinizing my back, as she wrote stuff down in her notebook. She then announced that I did indeed have a curve in my spine and she would be contacting my parents to notify them. I was crushed. Not only did it feel like I had just been told I was diagnosed with cancer, but I was equally as terrified as the possibility of wearing a brace.

Fortunately, after what seemed like a ton of doctor’s visits and multiple x-rays, it was determined I didn’t need to wear a brace, but the doc did say the scoliosis was most likely the cause of my neck pain, which I had been experiencing consistently since puberty. I was sent home with some stretches and exercises to do at home to manage my pain, but other than that, I was told there was nothing else to really do about it.

Over the years my pain levels got worse. I just dealt with it, under the impression that it was something I just had to live with because of my scoliosis. Then one day one of my mom’s friends mentioned how she was seeing a chiropractor for her neck pain. I was in college at this point, and although I had heard of chiropractic, I had never really considered it. However, I was desperate at that point, and I made an appointment right away with her chiropractor. My first session was almost life changing. Not only did the actual act of the chiropractic adjustment feel great, but I left my session with more energy and my mood elevated. I made a plan with my chiropractor regarding how many sessions per week I should see him, along with supplemental treatments prescribed by him including massage and electrical muscle stimulation.

Although my scoliosis occurred at a very young age, there is a type that can start as an adult. Adult scolioses usually occurs due to degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis. This is when the vertebrae begin to weaken on one side of the spine, causing it to become uneven and form a curve. Either way, both conditions can be very painful and need to be maintained in order to live a comfortable life. Like I found out years ago, chiropractic can help manage the pain caused by scoliosis through a series of manipulations. They are able to relieve pressure that is being put on the nerves, improving nerve function. Once the pain is managed and the nerve function is restored, then the muscles may begin to strengthen, which may in turn improve posture.
