Take Measures to Avoid Injuries When Active
By Tom Herrin
Once anyone decides it is time for them to get more serious about exercising, they need to plan to do it right. While it should be focused on building a stronger body, a prime consideration should be to prevent getting any kind of injury. Injuries obtained during physical activity can really take the wind out of the sails of anyone who is fired up and eager to make improvements. An injury during exercise can result in a considerable delay in the start of the program. It may also discourage an otherwise motivated individual. It doesn't take much to have a successful and injury-free program.
Warming up and Cooling down Are Big
Too many times, people try to take shortcuts in order to get into the thick of their new program. As they are in a hurry to see good results from their efforts, they may attempt to leap over some of the practices that are known to be effective. Warming up is as important a part of a good plan as any other exercise. At the other end of the session, cooling down is just as important. While warming up right can increase blood flow safely, cooling down can slow it down as well. It is critical for the heart to be able to return to its resting pace in order to protect the circulatory system.
Dress for the Occasion
No matter what anyone does, it seems that dressing for the task at hand is a key to having the greatest degree of success. When it comes to exercise, a person must know what the conditions will be like wherever they are. If it is warm, they will need to be sure to wear clothes that are lightweight and loose-fitting. This will allow them to move freely and keep cool at the same time. If it is colder, they need to wear clothing that will allow them to move freely but also be able to get warm after only a few minutes.
Learn as Much as Possible
Anytime we want to make progress doing anything, we must have a plan. If we will attempt to learn as much as possible about good practices, it can pay off. I have learned, by painful experience, about warming up. I have also learned that dressing correctly can make or break a workout. Especially in the cold, I try to get a feel for the conditions outdoors so that I can begin cool but become warm enough after about 15 minutes. For me, this works.
