Start the Day Well : Tips To Improve Spinal Health
I won't be the first to deny that taking care of your spinal health can seem like an overwhelming or even a downright confusing task at times. For all the talk that goes into improving your physical health, I think it is safe to say that the back and the spinal column are some of the least talked about parts of the body when it comes to making choices for a healthier lifestyle.
However, it should be encouraging to know that there are actually plenty of simple habits and lifestyle adjustments you can take on right away in order to improve your spinal health, while also working to strengthen the muscles surrounding the spine. I found some great suggestions for how to start your day off on a good note for spinal health and wellness from a helpful article by Spark People. Here is what I learned.
First, before you even wake up to start the day, your back and spine may be needing some help. It is important to understand how a person's sleeping position can directly impact the health of their spine. Sleeping on the back or the stomach puts way too much added stress and strain on the spinal column, which leads many people to wake up with aches and pains in the neck or back areas of the body. Instead, sleep on your side to alleviate unnecessary pressure. You may also find that placing a pillow between your legs adds more comfort.
Once you do wake up, there are two important rituals you should start practicing in order to improve your spine health. First, keep a glass of water on your nightstand so you can drink the entire thing before even getting out of bed. Staying hydrated from the get go of the day will help improve circulation and flexibility within your spinal column. Once you are hydrated, get out of bed and practice some helpful stretches. Start with an upper back release, which will strengthen the muscles supporting the upper area of your spine. Stand with your feet hip distance apart to begin. From here, clasp your hands together and round your upper back. Make sure your arms remain straight. Hold this position and take five deep breaths.
These are just a few helpful suggestions for improving your spinal health. It may benefit you to start seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis, since they will be able to give you a personalized wellness treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.
