Unhealthy Foods You Should Avoid
By Sara Butler
Eating healthy is all about balance. You need to learn how to indulge in the foods that you know don't have as much nutritional value in moderation, leaning heavily on whole foods in your diet for the most part. That can be a balance that is difficult to strike for a lot of people, so it's good to remind yourself from time to time just why it's so important. Here are a few of the foods that need to be eliminated or only indulged in from time to time in order for you to reduce preservatives, artificial ingredients, and unhealthy fats in your diet.
Coffee Creamer
There's nothing quite like that first cup of coffee in the morning. Coffee itself actually has some health benefits for you (in moderation, of course!) but the creamer you may be putting in your coffee? Not so much.
Coffee creamer is often made with anything but actually cream. Canola or soybean oil and sugar are often among the first ingredients. They also are full of synthetic ingredients such as monoglycerides that you're better off living without.
You don't have to live with black coffee though. If you need to cut it, then add some milk to it. If you want some more flavor, then plant-based creamers or creamers with only natural ingredients are a good bet -- but you still have to watch out for added sugars.
Fruit Juice
Fruit is good for you, so it stands to reason that fruit juice would be good for you too, right? Not so fast!
When fruit is juiced the things that make it good for you, such as fiber, are taken out. Most fruit juices also add in high-fructose corn syrup to sweeten it to the point that it's just as bad for you as a candy bar. Even with no added sugar, having all the fiber removed means that your body treats the natural sugars just as it would any type of sugar, often causing a spike in your blood sugar.
If you like the taste of fruit juice, then consider taking your water and adding some fresh fruit to it. It adds a hint of flavor that can satisfy your fruit juice cravings and it's better for you.
You have to be selective about the foods you choose because some foods are a lot worse for your health than you may have imagined.
