Airport Travel: 4 Tips to Help Your Back Survive

By Virginia Laird

When traveling for family vacation, a nice road trip is my favorite. However, there are some trips that require alternative travel. While an airplane may make the trip shorter (time wise) it can do little to help with the back pain that may accompany a long-distance trip. There are a few things to keep in mind while getting ready to head out to the airport.

Wear Shoes Made for Walking

Airports are large, for the most part. You need to be prepared to walk a long distance in the airport. Wearing comfortable shoes can be helpful. Tennis shoes are best. Remember, while at the airport there will be bags to tote and moving walkways to navigate, among other things, that could get in the way of wearing a less comfortable style. Back supportive shoes have long been recommended by chiropractors nationwide for travel.

Invest in Good Luggage

Chiropractors recommend trying to avoid heavy bags and the need to carry them long distances. Invest in a good set of luggage, if you haven’t already. This can save your back from a great deal of strain. Because airports are very large and the traffic there can be crowded, it is important to have luggage that you can deal easily with. Having one bag with wheels can help keep the load off your back. It is important to protect your back as much as possible.

Arrive Early to Your Terminal

Have you ever gotten to the terminal and could find no place to sit? Getting off your feet is another way to help protect your back. It is important when flying to arrive at your terminal early. There are never enough seats for everyone boarding the plane. To snag a seat near your terminal get there early. Chiropractors and research both suggest getting off your feet as one key to protecting your back.

Bring Extra Lumbar Support

Unless you sprung for a first class seat, the plane seat has little to do with comfort. Invest in a lumbar support pillow. They do exist and they are wonderful! Chiropractors recommend these devices for anyone traveling often or long distances. Because seats on planes (or in cars) were not designed for comfort, these lumbar supports can offer more to ease the pain of travel.

Good luck on your next visit to the airport!
