3 Reasons You Need to Eat Breakfast
By Virginia Laird
Growing up, many heard parents and teachers preach the importance of eating a good, healthy breakfast. Many who struggle to be morning people may also find it difficult to eat breakfast and question the validity of the "breakfast is important" argument. Seriously, what is the big deal about breakfast and is there any truth behind the claims?
A Study performed by Rush University found eating breakfast to have the following benefits:
- Encourages a lower BMI (body mass index)
- Led to consuming less fat throughout the day
- Made it easier to meet the recommended intake of fruits and vegetables
- Increased calcium intake
- Encouraged a higher fiber intake
The value of eating a healthy and balanced breakfast seem to be never-ending. Three reasons you need to include breakfast in your morning routine include:
- Breakfast gives the body energy
- Eating breakfast helps with concentration
- Breakfast helps control weight gain
Gives the Body Energy to Start the Day
Like fueling a car, it is equally important to give the body the necessary food it needs to work. A balanced breakfast offers both proteins and carbs. The carbs help the body to carry some energy long-term. Proteins are burned off quickly, but offer a great deal of energy to the brain and muscles. Choosing to skip breakfast may result in a lack of energy needed to get the brain going in the morning.
Eating Breakfast Allows for Better Concentration
For the brain to properly function, it needs the rest of the body to work as well. The brain thrives on proteins. Without feeding the body, the brain can get side tracked with confusion, frustration and other feelings that could have been prevented with the proper fuel.
Eating Breakfast Can Help Control Weight Gain
Most people do not want to gain weight. A great way to prevent this is to start each day with breakfast. Skipping breakfast can cause the person to overcompensate at the next meal. Overeating can become a problem for those who skip out on breakfast. Another reason it can cause people to gain weight is the imbalance of the metabolism. To keep to it balanced, the body needs to be fed routinely. Many healthcare professionals recommend eating five to six small meals every three hours to help stimulate and regulate a person's metabolism.
Bottom line: Eating breakfast is the best way to start your day!
