Staying Healthy While Caring for the Sick
By Donna Stark
There is no escaping it. At some point in your life, you will need to step up and take care of a loved one who is sick. And as hard as that may end up being, it will only get worse if you don't also take care of yourself in the process. How in the world will you be able to help the person who needs you the most if you end up getting sick as well? Have you thought about that? Well, if you haven't, don't worry! Your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have come up with some helpful tips on how you can deal with the loved ones in your life who are feeling a tad bit under the weather. Take a look.
Keep Your Distance
This may be the hardest thing to do, especially if you are dealing with a sick child or someone who is especially needy, but if your loved one is old enough to entertain themselves, then try to maintain a safe distance. Sure, you can be close when physically taking care of them and showering them with compassion, but after that, leave the room, shut the door, and let the TV or a book be their friend.
Keep Supplies in the 'Sick Room'
In addition to the convenience factor of having all the items you need right at your fingertips, keeping your supplies in the "sick room" will also prevent germs from escaping. Set up an area on top of the dresser or in the closet where you can store a thermometer, medications, and bottles of water. Obviously, keep all these items out of reach if the sick one is a young child.
Keep Washing Your Hands
It's important to wash your hands with soap and water frequently throughout the day, but especially so after coming into contact with anyone who is sick. Don't rush this either! A good tip to remember is to wash your hands the length of time it takes to sing the happy birthday song twice. Also, keep your hands away from your eyes, mouth, and nose!
Keep Your Home Clean
This goes further than merely picking toys off the floor. If someone is sick in your home, you need to clean and disinfect all the hard surfaces and objects that may have been exposed to them. Things to prioritize with cleaning are bathroom surfaces, light switches, door handles, kitchen counters, and remote controls.
Staying as Healthy as You Can!
Your family member needs you, so you need to make sure you are protecting your own health while taking care of them! Follow the steps above and be sure to eat healthily, sleep well, and exercise every day. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
