How to Reach Your Health Goals

Motivation is like most other things in life – there are times when you’re feeling very motivated and times when it can be a real struggle to work toward a goal. Trying to reach your health goals is no different. You may be very motivated at the start but find after a few days or weeks the excitement and fire just aren't there. What can you do to help you stay motivated so you can reach your health goals? Here are a few tips that might be game-changers.

Become a List Maker

Goals, both short- and long-term, should be written down. The key is to make a list that is achievable by setting realistic timelines for your goals. If your goal is to run a half marathon, that’s not something you’ll be able to go out and do next week – so be realistic.

It’s really important to set small, short-term goals along the way, too. This will help you to feel like you’re making progress as you celebrate the smaller victories along the way.

Reward Yourself

When you complete one of your short term goals you should celebrate it! On your list, you should write down a specific reward for each goal. The bigger the goal, the larger the reward should be! The reward can be anything you want it to be, but try to stay away from using food as a reward when you hit a milestone – that’s generally not a healthy thing to associate with goal setting.

Have a Gym Plan

It's not a good idea to walk into a gym without a plan. You will want to plan out what you’re going to do, how long you’re going to do it and then stick to it! Write out what exercises you will do and don’t let yourself cut it short.

It’s Not All or Nothing

If you have a few days where you slack off and lose sight of your goals, don’t just give up. If you fall into the trap of thinking it’s all or nothing then it can set you up for failure. Just get back on track as soon as you can and keep going!

Staying motivated can be difficult, especially when it comes to trying to develop new and healthy habits. Just remember you can’t be too hard on yourself. You are human, you will make mistakes. If you want to reach your goals you just have to take the good with the bad and keep working!
