Chiropractic Care for Epilepsy
Epilepsy is one of the scariest medical conditions in existence. When a patient is diagnosed with epilepsy, it may feel like an actual death sentence. With uncontrollable seizures occurring in the brain frequently and at a moment’s notice, patients often feel that they have lot control of their life. They take their medication and that medication can only do so much, but when the medication stops working, they feel that they have nowhere to turn. This is where chiropractic care comes in.
A seizure itself comes about when there is a series of neurons within the brain, that are firing abnormally without the body’s awareness. This intense concentration of firing neurons can be concentrated to just some clusters of neurons, or the firing can occur all throughout the brain. It is quite difficult to determine the causes of this spontaneous intense firing of the neurons, adding another layer of helplessness felt by patients with epilepsy. There is also a spectrum of intensity of these seizures, ranging from the loss of consciousness and awareness of time and space to convulsions and muscle spasms to the point where the patient is writhing on the floor uncontrollably.
More and more research is being publish to suggest a role for chiropractic care in the treatment of epilepsy. Specifically, chiropractic care an be used to enforce the proper alignment of the musculoskeletal system, specifically in the cervical spine which is most closely related to the functioning of the nerves in the brain. If the spine is not laid out correctly, then there may be communication problems within the nerves that lead from the cervical spine from the brain, contributing to the uncontrollable firing of neurons in the brain.
Research is finding a significant reduction in the amount of epileptic episodes in patients after seeking chiropractic care. Anti-convulsive medications can only take a patient so far but at some point if they are not working, alternatives need to be considered. Chiropractic care can provide epilepsy with a potentially life-changing alternative, perhaps lessening the amount of seizures a patient has per day or for the rest of their life. Seeing as how chiropractic has been effective with other neurological disorders, it makes sense that epilepsy is treated too.
