Preventing Falls for Senior Chiropractic Patients

When it comes to the elderly, there are so many potential threats to the health of this population. When we get older, our body’s start to break down. This process occurs faster for some people than it does others but no matter what, an unfortunate reality is that our bodies may not last as long as we want them to. We can take steps to preserve our bodies but ultimately, some health problems are not preventable.

One of the main threats to the health of the elderly is a fall. When we become older, our musculoskeletal system begins to feel the stress of the excessive wear and tear it has incurred over the years. Our bones thin out and become more brittle, our muscles weaken significantly and may be unable to keep us supported for long periods of time, and our brain’s ability to determine our body’s overall positioning may be slowed.

A significant body of research has identified dizziness as a main contributor in falls of elderly people. This dizziness can be related to the functioning and the alignment of the cervical spine and the neck. If there is improper alignment of the cervical spine, then communication to and from the brain may not be occurring in its normal way, leading to an increase in the frequency of dizzy spells.

So what are elderly patients to do to mediate their dizziness and prevent falls, which lead to even more significant injury? The help of chiropractic care may be of use in this scenario. A chiropractor may be able to manipulate the cervical spine to restore it to its proper alignment. When proper alignment is restored, then the proper level of communication is brought back to this area and the neurons in the neck and brain stem are able to start firing again. This can lead to less dizziness and to the patient preventing falls in the future.

Chiropractic care focuses on the prevention of health problems in the future. In using chiropractic care to prevent dizziness and thus avoid falls, elderly patients are doing themselves and their physical and mental health a huge service. A chiropractor may suggest different balance exercises and light stretches to help prevent further problems.
