Pain-Free Home Decorating Done Safely

By Brandi Goodman

Decorating for the holidays -- and any other time of year -- can be fun and exciting. It can also be painful if you aren't careful. You need to use caution when trying to hang up decorations so you can do so in a way that is safe and pain-free. A few tips in mind can help.

Keep Your Ladder Secure and Away From Power Lines

You may need a ladder to hang decorations outside. Always be sure you get it secured so the ladder will remain stable and steady while you use it. You also need to set it up away from power lines. You don't want to get zapped as you fall. It's wise to have someone else with you so they can offer help should a problem arise.

Make Sure Cords are in Low-Traffic Areas

It's too easy to trip over cords across the ground. Try to set things up so cords are only draped across low-traffic areas where no one tends to walk. This will prevent any mishaps from occurring.

Choose Your Weather Wisely

Perhaps you decided on a day to get everything put up. When that day arrives and the weather is poor, rethink your decision. You don't want to go ahead with your plans when the weather is wet and slippery. It can make it easier to fall and hurt yourself. Wait for a calm, dry day instead.

Wear Non-Slip Shoes

You don't want to hang up decorations outside with shoes that make it easy for you to slip. A non-slip pair with sturdy traction is what you need. They should also be comfortable and well-fitting.

Be Prepared

One of the best things you can do to keep your decorating spree pain-free is to be prepared. This means having all of your supplies and items out and within reach. You never want to twist, stretch, and struggle to reach your stuff because it can cause you to pull something or fall. Grab what you need in advance and have it with you so you don't make the attempt to grab for it at the spur of the moment.

Avoid pain and problems this holiday season by keeping these tips in mind. You want to be careful when attempting to get your decorations put up so you can enjoy all your hard work and the season. You wouldn't want to be stuck in bed with back pain and miss out on the festivities.
