Give Your Exercise Motivation a Boost

By Sandy Schroeder

Low motivation can sneak up on you when you are trying to exercise every day. It starts with excuses at my house. There's too much to do to fit the gym in.  Or a big project has to be done right now. Whatever the excuse, once I let an exercise routine slide, it is way to skip the next one.

If you can relate, Real Simple has some suggestions to help you find the motivation to actually be out there exercising every day. Rethink your routines with these tips.

Update your sneakers - Worn out gym shoes invite injuries. Make sure you get good support and good shock absorption. Get a good fit and make sure they are comfortable. Then put them by the door as a reminder and take them with for after work sessions or lunchtime walks.

Add new appeal to your routines - If you always do the treadmill in the evening or walk every morning,  it may be time to add a dance class or try tai chi. Find out what laughter yoga is and try it.  Or maybe the whole family needs new bikes for weekend bike path tours. Look for things that sound like fun and make them happen.

Reward yourself for your efforts - Start tracking your exercise routines and pay yourself every week. Use cash or treat yourself to a new hat, sweatshirt or lunch out at your favorite place. Researchers show rewards do make a difference.

Start stretching your goals - As you pull walks, runs, or workouts together, extend your goals to challenge yourself. Add a few more minutes to your walks or try a new weight-lifting routine. Take pride in your progress.

Plan ahead - Set up your exercise clothes and snack bars for the whole week and plan your outings. Pin down new bike paths or walks by the water or sign up for a community nature hike. Keep looking for more ways to stay active.

Enlist a buddy - Add a friend and enjoy your walks more as you keep each other on track.

Note your progress - As you get into daily routines, check in with your doctor to see how your health numbers stack up. Maintaining a good weight and getting lower blood pressure readings can all be signs that your efforts are working.

Whatever you do to put a new spin on your exercises will help. Keep looking for new ideas and keep moving.
