Heavy Exercise is Not the Only Way to Improve Health

By Tom Herrin

Trying to develop better overall health can be done in a variety of ways.  While many people engage in some heavy workouts, others find that much lower stress activities can make quite a difference.  It is not necessarily the intensity that determines the benefit but the consistency of schedule and the fact that some kind of resistance is offered.  A lot of people, particularly older individuals, have found great success with activities involving water.  While swimming is one very good water activity, there are others that can be similar in effectiveness while offering protection from injury at the same time.

A Great Exercise For Rehab

Many people who have experienced serious illness, surgeries, or injuries may be in need of an exercise program that reduces stress.  Exercising in water can be a good way to take pressure off of injured joints and muscles.  Swimming can be very effective, but it is not the only thing that can be done in water.  Some people simply walk in water for a workout.  The water offers resistance but also supports the body as well.  It serves as a sort of massage to sore or injured muscles as a person moves.

Water Always Has A Soothing Property

Whether it is watching it or standing in it, water has an almost hypnotic ability to draw someone’s attention.  Watching the flow of water with its natural smoothness can lower blood pressure and decrease stress.  Spending a little time in the water can be relaxing and provide an escape from many of the troubles that are part of the daily grind.

There Is Still Quality Exercise

Even though it is really dancing to a different beat, exercising in the water can do a pretty good job of burning calories due to the resistance of the water.  No matter what activity a person chooses, he or she has to deal with the natural resistance the water provides.  This is a sure way to build endurance.  Even though exercise generates heat, the water cools.  This is particularly helpful in the warmer weather.  People who are older or less conditioned can benefit from exercising in water to support their weight, burn calories, and cool them off at the same time.  It is a great way to increase conditioning while preventing typical problems that come with new exercise.  It can be a low cost way to get some meaningful results.
