Workout Clothes Could Mean Success or Failure

By Tom Herrin

People don’t usually think about clothing as being a big part of a workout, but it can be an important part of a successful program.  When people have a certain amount of comfort as they tackle an exercise routine, they are much more likely to enjoy it and look forward to participating in it.  A little planning can integrate the workout with the dress and come up with the kind of complete program they really desire.

Clothes Need to Allow the Best Exercise Conditions

The clothes people wear should allow the right kind of movement.  Joggers need clothes that are loose enough to allow free movement but not so loose that they interfere with the rhythmic pace of jogging.  As a bicycle rider, I never want to wear pants that could get caught up in the moving parts of the bike.  On the other hand, activities such as yoga are better suited for clothes that fit a little snugger.  This provides good cover while still allowing people to move and stretch as needed.

Wind Or Rain Require Protection

When people exercise outside when there is a threat of rain, they need to use caution.  Heavy rain or electrical storms can be life threatening.  It is best to avoid the possibility of getting caught in any of these situations.  Light rain is something that should not necessarily prevent people from working out.  There are adequate kinds of clothing that can provide protection from rain and still allow good movement.  Wind can pose special challenges.  Strong wind can make movement difficult.  It can cause some clothes to have a sail effect.  Cold wind can penetrate many fabrics, making the wind feel like it is piercing like a cold knife.  Materials that break the wind can be helpful and protect from problems such as frostbite.

Breathability Can Be Important In Warm Weather

When people exercise in warm weather, it is helpful to wear clothes that allow proper airflow.  Fabric that can wick away moisture can make the workout much more pleasant.  These fabrics can help to keep body temperature cooler through evaporation.  They are lightweight and available at just about any store that carries athletic clothes.  If you can simply give some thought to the conditions in which you will be working out, you can plan ahead and improve the success of your workout dramatically.
