Beauty Trends That Belong in the Past

By Genevieve Smith

If you look back through the ages, you’ll find beauty trends that make your jaw drop. You can't help but shake your head and wonder, “Why?” But what about those trends that are only too recent, and you’re too close to realize that they may not be in your best beauty interest? Your favorite style icons may have passed down some tips and tricks that have better solutions these days. Allow modern technological advances in beauty to update your world on trends that no longer need to be.

  • Shaving and Redrawing Eyebrows - These days, there are so many products and services out there, from microblading to brow gel, that you need not remove your natural brows to get the shape you desire. Bye-bye stubble and unnatural-looking brows, hello heartthrob!
  • Warming Up the Eyelash Curler - There once was a trend to turn your lash curler into a curling iron by heating it up with the blow dryer. Please stop doing this. It poses a risk to the rims of your eyes in the case of a slip-up! Nowadays, there are more advanced mascaras with curling agents in the formula designed to help without harming. And when it comes to eyelash curlers, look for ones with pillowy padding in the crescents for your optimal eye health.
  • Shunning Moisturizer if You Have Oily Skin - Not only are moisturizing formulas more advanced to address different skin types, but the logic behind this one has been found to be false. If your skin is under-hydrated, it produces more oil to compensate. So research the right brands for your skin type, and get moisturizing to keep your oil production at a healthy level!
  • Swearing Off Lipstick If You’re a Redhead - There once was a time when our ginger-fairing friends were told that lipstick shades would clash with their hair tone. Nonsense! Wear the shade of your dreams! Plus, if you're feeling celebratory, honor your hair color by opting for a lipstick with a punchier shade of your locks.
  • Rinse and Repeat - Shampoo of yore hallowed the rinse-and-repeat method. We now know this only dries out your hair; it's OK to maintain some of those natural oils. Plus, you can fill that extra time saved with whatever else fulfills you. Follow your heart, girl.

Beauty is ultimately about you feeling beautiful. Protect your natural features, whether it be your brows, eyes, skin or heavenly hair, through a less-is-more approach. When you're feeling sassy, wear whatever lipstick tone makes you happy, and be sure to reclaim your time for the things that make you, well, you!
