Fun Winter Activities For the Family

By Debra Rodzinak

Even though the weather is getting colder, don’t let that keep you or your family inside.  If you find yourself getting cabin fever this winter, try some of these fun outdoor activities for the entire family.

Sledding

Find a nice sloping hill.  Sledding is fun going down, but there is an aerobic benefit when pulling the sled uphill for another fun run.  Walking up a hill for a short 30-minute period burns an amazing 240 calories.

Cross-Country Skiing

An excellent way to burn calories, both the upper and lower body are used during cross country skiing.  An average person can burn 340 calories in half an hour.  With cross-country skiing, an added bonus is that hills are not needed.

Downhill Skiing

Often an expensive form of exercise, downhill skiing is fun for the entire family.  With most skiers having fun for several hours, two hours of skiing can burn almost 1,000 calories.

Ice Skating

A fun afternoon for families with children, many skating rinks will rent skates so no investment in equipment is necessary.  Ice skating burns 250 calories every half hour, on aveage.

Snowshoeing

A total-body workout, snowshoeing is a fun winter activity that gets the blood pumping and leg muscles toned.  An average adult can burn 270 calories every half hour of snowshoeing.

Playing in the Snow

Some of a child’s best memories are made on snow days.  Be a part of those memories by helping your child build a snow fort, a snow man, make snow angels, or have a good old fashioned snowball fight.  Depending on the activity level, 500 to 600 calories can be burned in an hour.

Snow Tubing

Just like sledding, tubing works the leg muscles when traveling back to the top of a hill.  If you are at a ski resort, forgo the ski lift and walk up the hill to burn those calories.

Touch Football

A family tradition for many on Thanksgiving afternoon, touch football can be played when the weather begins to turn cool.  No snow is needed and the calories burned will help justify that extra piece of pumpkin pie you ate at lunch.

Walking or Running

These activities can be done year round and with the entire family.  Walking in the winter is fun if you take a walk around the neighborhood and look at all of the holiday decorations.  Walk to the park and pick up pine cones for a holiday wreath.  If you are walking in ice or snow, be sure to wear the proper footwear to keep from slipping.

Ice Hockey

Similar to skating, ice hockey is a fun group activity.  A half hour game of hockey can burn 300 calories.  Just make sure all players wear protective gear.
