Alternatives to NSAIDs for Back Pain Relief

By Debra Rodzinak

Some of the side effects of over-the-counter pain medications seem to be risky to a certain degree.  New research has discovered that these types of pain relievers actually have a limited effect for back pain relief and raise the risk of negative side-effects.

Review of NSAID Studies

In the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, 6000 patients were studied in 35 trials to determine the effectiveness and overall safety of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for back pain.  Researchers found that NSAIDs had little effect on pain relief, but an increased risk for development of gastrointestinal disorders.  The conclusion was that there are currently no over-the-counter medications that are effective in reliving back pain.

Prescription Drugs

On the other hand, prescription drugs are known to relieve pain -- at least for awhile.  However, over time, the effectiveness begins to diminish, the underlying problem is not fixed, and patients need higher doses to achieve the same level of relief.  This can easily lead to addiction.  Therefore, the American Chiropractic Association urges people to look to alternative forms of treatment first in dealing with back and musculoskeletal pain.

Chiropractic

Beginning with chiropractic, there is no use of drugs or surgery to relive pain.  Rather, the root cause of pain is treated with gentle spinal adjustments.  Many patients report immediate relief after undergoing just one chiropractic treatment.  Continued chiropractic treatments ensure that the spine and surrounding tissues are functioning properly.  Chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic believe that when the body’s central nervous system is functioning properly, the body is better able to heal itself naturally.

Exercise

Many chiropractors also advise patients to begin a regimen of back strengthening exercises.  By strengthening the muscles of the back, the spine is better placed in proper alignment allowing the central nervous system to function properly.  As part of an overall treatment plan, the expert doctors at The Joint Chiropractic work with patients to develop a personalized plan that includes specific exercises for their particular needs.
