Chiropractic and Exercise Relieves Fibromyalgia Pain
By Debra Rodzinak
Pain from fibromyalgia affects many Americans every year. Those who have tried traditional treatment methods and are still experiencing pain and discomfort are turning to chiropractic and exercise for a natural path to pain relief.
Symptoms of Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia causes joint and muscle pain, along with bone fatigue. This combination of pain discourages many people from exercising. The lack of exercise leads to muscles that are weak and exacerbates pain and continues the cycle of pain and inactivity related to fibromyalgia. Many people wonder if they should just “soldier on” and exercise through this pain.
Exercise for Pain Relief
When the muscles are strengthened and flexible, function can be improved. There are many advantages to exercising when suffering from fibromyalgia. These include:
- Improved circulation
- Increased sleep quality
- Improved mood and less depression
- Weight loss
- Improved quality of life
In the past, patients with fibromyalgia were discouraged from performing any type of strenuous exercises. However, recent studies have shown that exercise actually helps to alleviate the painful symptoms of fibromyalgia.
Exercise needs to be approached with an understanding that fibromyalgia symptoms can decrease the success of continuing an exercise program. Taking certain steps can increase the chance of success, such as:
- Wait until a flare-up is over before beginning an exercise program
- Make sure to warm up and cool down with gentle stretching
- Build up to a full workout slowly by adding reps over time
Types of Exercises
Exercises that increase the range-of-motion along with low-impact aerobic exercises are best for patients that suffer from fibromyalgia. Some particular exercises include:
- Water exercises that are performed in water that is 86 degrees or warmer ease and loosen joints
- Pilates, with its low-impact strength training and flexibility, can ease neck and back pain
- Tai chi helps to increase strength, flexibility, and balance
- Yoga allows a combination of stretching, strength building, and meditation
Due to the specific pain felt in the joints and muscles, chiropractic treatments can bring relief to many who suffer from the pain of fibromyalgia by aligning the spinal joints. A properly aligned spinal column allows the body to function properly and aid in healing naturally.
