Pregnancy and Back Pain Relief

By Debra Rodzinak

Ask any woman who has had a child and she will all tell you the same complaint: backpain.  Other than the excess weight pulling at their lower back, there are other reasons that most pregnant women experience back pain.

Hormonal Changes

The body of a pregnant woman undergoes many changes during the nine months she is carrying her baby.  One of these changes includes the secretion of a hormone called relaxin.  Relaxin allows the pelvis to open up for an easier delivery.  However, with this change, the bone structure of the pelvis also changes and pressure can be placed on the sciatic nerve.  The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, traveling from the lower back down the leg to the foot.  When this nerve is pinched or pressed, the pain can be intense and cause difficulty walking or changing positions.  Since standing, walking, bending, or even moving can aggravate the sciatic nerve, what can a pregnant woman do to find relief?

Finding Relief from Sciatic Pain

First, try to limit the amount of standing, walking, bending, or lifting that is done throughout the day.  All of these movements can make the pain worse.  However, for many busy women, this is not an option.

Next, when relaxing or sleeping, do not lie on the back.  Lie on the side that is not affected by the nerve pain.  This reduces the pressure placed on the sciatic nerve.  Placing a pillow between the knees can also provide relief while allowing the spine to rest in a neutral position.

Finally, visit your local chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic for a gentle spinal adjustment that is natural, safe, and effective.  A chiropractic adjustment to the lower back can help the pelvis shift to a normal position that may relieve the sciatic nerve pressure causing the pain.  Since many pregnant women cannot take pain medication, finding a natural path to pain relief is needed.
