Spring into a Healthier Mindset
By Brandi Goodman
Springtime tends to alleviate many of the mental health struggles people face in the winter during a period of seasonal affective disorder. The sun is shining more often. The birds are out and chirping each morning. The air feels refreshing instead of bitter and cold. The spring season offers many opportunities to clear your mind. Here are a few ways you can spring into a healthier mindset and improve your well-being.
Refresh Your Mind and Home
A clean home can have tremendous impact on overall well-being. People tend to feel more stressed and overwhelmed when their house is in disarray or cluttered to a severe extent. Taking the time for spring cleaning allows you to refresh your mind and home at the same time. You can feel good about removing clutter and experience relief once you see the neat and tidy atmosphere left behind. It's important to do more than just getting rid of unnecessary items, though. Spring cleaning should really be the time for a full deep clean, wiping down surfaces and eliminating germs that have built up during the most common flu season that is winter.
Enjoy Time Outside
Spending time outside isn't always the easiest during the cold winter months. Once spring arrives you have much more opportunity to head outdoors and enjoy nature. Going for a walk is a simple yet effective method for improving mental health. Your brain releases endorphins during exercise like this that can have you feeling good overall. Being in the sun and taking in Vitamin D is also beneficial for the mind. You tend to feel much more rejuvenated and free when you're outside than you are inside.
Keep Yourself Clean
Looking and feeling clean is a great way to improve your mental health. You tend to feel better about yourself when you're feeling fresh and not sitting at home slumped in your chair with greasy hair and grimy hands. Because you're going outside and engaging in outdoor activities more often during the springtime, it's also best to wash your hands more often. This simple act can have you feeling good about yourself and staying motivated to continue the healthy habit.
Use the spring season as a way to clear your mind of the troubles that have accumulated, as well as the junk that has. Spring cleaning is done at this time for a reason. Use it as a way to improve your mental health. Find more time to get outside as well instead of staying cooped up indoors. These options combined can greatly change your mindset to a healthier and happier one.
