March Your Way Toward Better Health

By Brandi Goodman

The month of March is a great time to start marching toward better health. The activity is a great form of exercise that can boost your mental well-being at the same time. Get marching for major benefits.

An Easy Exercise Option

What better way is there to get into shape than by simply marching in place? You can stand in the same spot and march your feet to really get in a good workout for your lower body. This easy exercise option can be done anywhere.

It Strengthens Your Hips and Glutes

The hips and glutes are two of the main areas strengthened by marching. Whether you stand in place or you actually march up and down the halls or sidewalk, you'll be enhancing your muscle and bone strength within your lower body. This will allow you to engage in a more demanding physical exercise routine down the line.

Develops Balance and Coordination

Some people are unsteady on their feet. Marching helps to improve this. You can develop balance and a better sense of coordination when you learn to march properly and build your strength. Your core is another targeted area by the movement.

Numerous Techniques to Try

One size does not fit all when it comes to marching. There are actually numerous techniques to try so you can find one that best suits your needs. You can even "march" while lying down. The bridge march, for example, puts you on the floor in a bridge position. Your hips should be off the ground. Holding this position, lift your right knee back toward your chest. Return to position and lift your left knee this time, going back and forth for several repetitions.

Standing in place to march and actually marching up and down the block are also different methods. You can try a sandbag rotation march as well to add resistance and increase the difficulty of the exercise.

Marching Is Often Combined With Another Activity

You may not even be using marching as a form of exercise. The activity is often combined with something else. Say you're in the marching band. You're going to have to play your instrument as you march. This is a great way to boost your coordination and balance, while also enhancing your concentration and memory.

March your way toward better health this March and every month thereafter. The exercise is a great option for anyone looking to improve themselves physically or mentally. It's an easy workout option that brings many benefits.
