Find Relief with These Back Pain Tips

By Sara Butler

Lower back pain can be a real pain. You may feel helpless in its clutches as you experience it. Just remember, you’re not alone. According to the National Institutes of Health, a whopping 80 percent of people will experience back pain at some point, and it’s the leading cause of missed work and disability in the United States. Here are a few practical ways you can help combat back pain in your everyday life.

Use Cold Therapy

You don’t need something high tech or in a bottle to help relieve your back pain because ice can work wonders. A simple cold pack can be effective enough to help and it’s been time tested to prove that it really does work.

If you injure your back, apply ice as soon as possible and for the first 24 to 72 hours. You can also apply ice after any activity that causes you stiffness or pain. You can use a gel pack, ice in a plastic bag, or even a bag of frozen vegetables to get the job done.

Use Heat Therapy

For those who have chronic back pain, heat therapy may be the answer. You never want to apply heat when inflammation is present since it will make it worse, but if you’re struggling with pain and stiffness, then heat may be the answer, though you may want to consider alternating heat and ice when you’re battling chronic back pain.

Hamstring Stretches

Tight hamstrings may be playing a big role in your back pain. When your hammies are tight, they pull your pelvis back. This can cause a misalignment that results in an aching lower back, so get around that by making sure to stretch!

Incorporate hamstring stretches into your daily routine, just as you do brushing your teeth or taking a shower, and you may notice a big difference in your back pain.

See Your Chiropractor

An aching back is a perfect excuse to go The Joint to see your chiropractor, who may be able to determine what is causing your back pain and help resolve it before it gets worse. Chiropractors can also offer other suggestions to help combat back pain you’re experiencing.

If you are struggling with back pain, discuss it with your chiropractor during your next visit to The Joint Chiropractic!
